Google has backtracked on its earlier stance, confirming that non-custodial cryptocurrency wallets will not be banned from the Play Store. The clarification comes after widespread backlash from the crypto community over new licensing requirements initially interpreted as applying to all wallet types.

Updated rules, set to take effect October 29, had required developers in 15 jurisdictions—including the U.S. and EU—to obtain financial registrations like FinCEN MSB status or MiCA licensing. The policy appeared to target both custodial and non-custodial wallets, sparking fears of mass delistings.

The tech giant later clarified via social media that non-custodial solutions fall outside the scope of its Cryptocurrency Exchanges and Software Wallets Policy. Android users in major markets can now breathe easier—their access to self-custody tools remains intact.
